Whenua Current is a two-panel mixed-media work from Hollie O’Neill’s Papatūānuku Series, inspired by the shifting waters, earthy textures and grounding presence of Aotearoa’s whenua.
Tonal pigments and tactile surfaces are layered with flowing epoxy, creating a sense of movement between land and water. Across the two panels, the organic forms flow and connect, evoking the natural rhythms of the landscape and a quiet sense of belonging.

‘Whenua Current’ is from my Papatuānuku Series that captures the spirit of Aotearoa’s
landscapes — the earth’s textures, the shifting waters, the grounding presence of the
whenua. After immersing myself in nature, I carry back a sense of connection and
belonging, which becomes the emotional foundation for each artwork. In the studio, I
translate these impressions through tonal colour palettes and tactile surfaces. By
combining pigment with epoxy polymer, I create fluid, glossy finishes that evoke bodies
of water and flow over the organic rhythms of the land. Each piece becomes a quiet
conversation with Papatuānuku, honouring her presence and energy.
