Golden Kiwi honours one of Aotearoa's most treasured native species, inviting a contemplative, almost spiritual connection with the endangered Kiwi of Aotearoa.
Each brushstroke reflects my love for this remarkable bird. Adorned with luminous 24ct gold leaf, the Kiwi becomes both icon and ancestor — the gold symbolising its precious 30-million-year legacy and elevating it as a living treasure. The richly textured surface pays homage to its ancient lineage, echoing the layered depth of New Zealand’s natural history.
Originally, I envisioned the Kiwi cloaked in midnight blue, a tribute to its mysterious, nocturnal world. As the painting unfolded, however, the palette softened and transformed into electric, glowing manganese blues. These radiant hues reveal the Kiwi’s sweet, endearing clumsiness — a gentle counterpoint to its extraordinary resilience and evolutionary strength.
Through gold, texture, and luminous colour, The Golden Kiwi becomes both homage and heartfelt offering. I hope this piece resonates with you.
